Israel detained 17 people for attacking a Palestinian village in the West Bank

On January 24, several Israelis in several vehicles were on their way to the settlement of Yitzharnear Nablus when they stopped at the Palestinian village of Hawara and “injured a Palestinian” and caused “significant damage to shops,” police said.

The defendants had “clubs, stones” and other “objects,” authorities added.

“The seventeen suspects, including a minor, lived in the settlements, in Jerusalem and in northern Israel,” the police added, without specifying where the arrests took place.

UN experts have expressed concern about the rise in settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, a territory that Israel has occupied since 1967.

According to these observers “the Israeli government and the army do very little to reduce this violence and protect the Palestinians.”

Some 2.9 million Palestinians and some 475,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank in communities that are considered illegal under international law.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recorded 410 Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the first 10 months of 2021, up from 358 in all of 2020.
