The then Colonel Róbinson González, according to the agency, “provided logistical and armed advice” the drug boss and apparently “used his rank to contact and convince active uniformed officers so that, in exchange for gifts, they would alert ‘Matamba’ about the movements of the military units and the procedures scheduled in the region.”
Retired Colonel Harry Gómez, who received the equivalent of $12,700 a month from the Clan del Golfo to the Army allowed the exit of cocaine through the Pacific bound for the United States and Europe, according to the prosecution.
He warned “about the operations planned by the Colombian government and would have designed a plan to make his superiors believe that Matamba had died,” he added, according to the AFP agency.
Five other active soldiers were imprisoned on charges of giving drug traffickers “food, uniforms, boots, and campaign and communication elements.”
The uniformed men are charged with the crimes of conspiracy to commit a crime, bribery and illegal use of uniforms and insigniasaid the prosecution.
Eight other people identified as belonging to the drug trafficking network were also captured and taken to prison, “preventively”, before a judge determines whether there are convictions, said a prosecutor’s official.
The investigations run parallel to another that is being carried out against General Jorge Herrera, dismissed on Sunday from his post for allegedly allying himself with a drug gang known as Los Pocillos.
