Zelensky tightened sanctions against Strana and blogger Shariy

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky ordered Internet providers to block all access to information resources of the Ukrainian edition of Strana and blogger Anatoly Shariy. Corresponding amendments were made to the decree on sanctions and published on Wednesday, February 16, on the website of the Ukrainian leader.

“To put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine dated December 30, 2021 “On Amendments to Personal Special Economic and Other Restrictive Measures (Sanctions),” the document says.

The president’s decision was commented on by the Strana newspaper. The newspaper’s Telegram channel notes that this action indicates an attempt by the authorities to “further put pressure on providers”, which had previously blocked the publication’s resources without any decree, simply by a call from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“Well. This is truly recognition of our work. So they continue to follow her. So, they are afraid, ”the journalists noted.

The sanctions of the editor-in-chief of the Strana publication Igor Guzhva were introduced in August 2021. Also, their action extended to the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) Denis Pushilin, politician and blogger Anatoly Shariy and his wife Olga.

In particular, last February, the SBU suspected that Shariy was carrying out illegal activities in the information sphere “on order of foreign structures”, which was damaging the country’s national security. Later, Shariy was put on the wanted list, and the prosecutor’s office opened treason proceedings against him. Then the blogger noted in his Telegram channel that sanctions had been imposed not only against him, but also against his relatives, and stated that he intended to fight.

In early February 2022, it became known that the YouTube video hosting blocked the UkrLive and First Independent channels, which were subject to sanctions in Ukraine. On the night of February 4, a number of accounts from which the channels broadcast were closed. According to journalists, such decisions are a manifestation of censorship. At the same time, they noted that a monopoly on information is being created in the country by purging and intimidating independent media. So, on the same day, the channel of the Luhansk Information Center was removed from YouTube, and this was done without any notifications or warnings.
