Cuba: cryptocurrency businesses against the blockade

The newspaper quoted experts and connoisseurs of the modalityamong them the doctor of Sciences Miguel Katrib, professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing of the University of Havana (UH), who, according to his opinion, that issue “continues to be confusing for many” islanders.

“And it is that, in a few words, blockchain is everything that we do not understand about economics, distributed computing and cryptography”quoted the publication to the expert.

Katrib explained that the blockchain is “known as distributed ledger technology, a database system where the information, which is encrypted, is kept by its owners and not by a central server.”

“It is a database stored in a network of several computers connected to each other and that constantly grows, as new transactions are added to it. These, in turn, are grouped into blocks, forming a continuous chain”he added.

“More than 8,500 cryptocurrencies and large companies and transnationals such as Microsoft, Amazon, Tencent, Nvidia, Walmart, PayPal, Samsung and the Central Bank of China are calculated, which carry out daily operations with blockchain” worldwide, he revealed to Cuban readers.

Within the framework of general explanations, the Granma article revealed that in Cuba there are “steps forward” in the use of the modality led by state companies and specialists.

“Several projects are developed that, as a basis, use the logic of the blockchain”stressed the newspaper.

In this range, he mentioned a local state company, Tecnomática, which establishes “the traceability of aviation fuel.” He also described another project related to the identification of drug owners and the management of their information and transfer.

In this last case, the Cuban objective is to achieve, with the new uses, “better logistics regarding the possession of medicines, of each specific product, and of the transfers, of the movements that are made between the drugstores,” the newspaper quoted another expert.

“Thus, the process is given greater control and avoids some undesirable events related, almost always, to illicit activities in the acquisition and purchase of medicines”he added.

“The aim is even for health system prescriptions to be carried out in the same way, a method that today is only used by the most advanced and modern pharmaceutical companies in the world,” underscored the analysis published by Granma.

A Cuban “youtuber” and self-employed worker also interviewed estimated that with the use of the modality “one of the daily problems faced by small private businesses” on the island could be overcome due to not being able to market their products and services abroad online way.

The businessman attributed the obstacle to blocking USA and of the economic and financial sanctions of that country on Cuba, because Cubans do not have access to this type of international payment instruments.

“But, with the use of the blockchain, these walls disappear, since access to this technology has no restrictions, and some people, albeit informally, have established remittance flows (money sent from abroad NDR) exploiting this option. “said the youtuber.

“It is becoming more and more common to see a self-employed worker who is interested in selling, for example, a cake, an online reservation of his apartment or any other service or product on the internet, through the use of cryptocurrencies, and in this way they manage to interact with foreign trade” added the “self-employed person”.

In Cuba, on September 15, Resolution 215/2021 of the Central Bank of Cuba came into force, linked to the regulation of the use of these assets on the Island.

The legal document established regulations for the Licensing of Virtual Asset Service Providers for operations related to financial, foreign exchange and collection or payment activityin and from the national territory.

In the case of natural persons, they assume the risks and responsibilities derived from operating with virtual assets and virtual asset service providers that operate outside the Banking and Financial System, even when transactions with virtual assets between said persons are not prohibited. people, warned the regulation.
