To date, the cryptocurrencies accepted as means of payment in Wikimedia are Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum, using BitPay, as it appears in the ‘Other ways to donate’ section of Wikipedia.
It was a few months ago when the foundation announced that it planned to stop accepting donations in cryptocurrencies because “times and situations change” and opened a vote on January 10 for users to participate in this decision.
As the foundation has pointed out in a publication, just under 400 users participated in the vote and debate on the Wikimedia proposal. Among some of the comments in favor of the elimination of cryptocurrencies, environmental sustainability issues and the risk to the reputation of the community for accepting cryptocurrencies as a means of payment stand out.
On the other hand, most of the votes in favor of the use of cryptocurrencies focused on arguments such as the existence of those that consume less energy or the security they offer in those countries with less freedom of movement and oppressive.
According to the results collected in this poll, 232 people voted in favor of eliminating cryptocurrencies as a means of exchange, while only 94 voted against this change, indicating that 71.17 percent of the community that has participated in this survey support the WMF proposal.
After announcing this resolution from Wikimedia they have indicated that they will continue “monitoring the problem” and appreciating comments depending on how this measure evolves among Wikimedia members.
“We will continue to be flexible and responsive to the needs of volunteers and donors. Thanks again to all who have provided valuable input on this increasingly complex and evolving topic,” this text entry reads.
