The European body reduced its monthly projection for this year’s corn harvest in the European Union in a 8%either 5.9 million tons, joining other tipsters who lowered their expectations due to hot weather on the block.

The Commission now sees the EU maize crop at 65.8 million tonnes against the forecast of 71.7 million at the end of June and the 72.7 million harvested last year.according to supply and demand data released late last week.

The Commission did not comment on weather conditions in a note on the website, but said the forecast cut mainly reflected lower yield projections for Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

On the other hand, corn crops have withstood heat waves and a drought increasingly worse during their crucial summer growth period.

Expected EU maize imports in the 2022/23 season increased by 1.5 million tonnes to 16.5 million tonnes, now in line with imported volume in 2021/22, according to Commission data.

For common wheat, the EU executive lowered its crop forecast to 123.9m tonnes from the previous 125m and down from 130.1m last year. He also cut his EU soft wheat export forecast by 2 million tonnes to 36 million, citing expectations of increased shipments from Ukraine.
