Cryptocrimes: how the millionaire scam was carried out during The Merge of Ethereum

The scam worked because the scammers “took advantage of the confusion surrounding the Ethereum Merge” to “pluck unsuspecting users”, according to Chainalysis. The scam consisted of the classic model of “Trust Trade”

It works like this: the scammer invites the victim to send a certain amount of money to receive up to double the amount invested in return. For this, the perpetrators pose as celebrities or influencers.

As reported by CriptoNoticias, Scammers posed as Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin to attack their victims. On networks, criminals offered gifts of up to 100,000 ETH on behalf of the Ethereum Foundation.

In detail, the scammers underpinned their attacks on countries like Panama, Chile, Spain, Australia, Finland, Portugal, and many others, according to the analysis firm.
