The agreement was announced on Tuesday by the Communication Workers of America (CWA) union, to which this Zenimax cell, creator of games such as DOOM, Elder Scrolls or Fallout, is affiliated.
In a statement to the CNBC economic portal, a Microsoft representative assured that they recognize CWA as their interlocutor “in light of the results of their recent union vote,” adding that it is now time “to enter into good faith negotiations as we move toward a collective agreement.”
For his part, the president of CWA, Chris Shelton, stressed that, unlike “other video game giants that have resorted to attacking, sabotaging and demoralizing their employees who wanted to unionize, Microsoft has chosen another path, which It will reinforce their business culture (…) and could serve as a model for the industry.”
The formation of Microsoft’s first union in its 47-year history can be considered a milestone, but it adds to previous union achievements at some of the big tech companies traditionally reluctant to collectively organize their workers, such as Amazon or from Apple.
Usuallyworkers at tech companies are paid better than the US average, and the companies try to dissuade them from union efforts with high incentives, often promoting the message that internal promotion outside of a union is easier.
