The software giant develops its machine learning chips to power AI projects for OpenAI and reduce costs.
It was learned that the business giant was secretly developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chips, according to a report by The Information which also revealed that the motive is to reduce the costs that OpenAI currently owns.
In this way, it seeks to reduce the dependence of the Redmond company on Nvidia GPUs. That company’s GPU for training machine learning systems, the Nvidia H100, currently costs as much as $40,000, amid increasing market shortages.
Meta, Google and Amazon have also started designing machine learning chips in recent years.
In the case of Microsoft, The Information claimed that the chips are being developed under the codename ‘Athena’. The new chips are already being tested by members of Microsoft’s internal machine learning team and OpenAI developers.
Company co-founder and CEO Sam Altman stated “I think we’re at the end of the era where these are going to be, like, giant, giant models. We’ll improve them in other ways.”
Amazon entered as a new entrant with its first self-developed models as part of its Bedrock AI infrastructure rollout. On April 17, Elon Musk announced the imminent release of TruthGPT, a supposed “truth-finder” big language model.
