John Warnock, one of the co-founders of Adobe, has died

In three years, the company lost its founding fathers. In 2021, Charles Geschke had passed away and now John Warnock.

john warnockco-founder of Adobe, the maker of Photoshop, died on Saturday at the age of 82, the company said in a statement released early Sunday. The cause of his death has not been revealed at this time.

“This is a sad day for the Adobe community and for the industry, to which it has been an inspiration for decades,” Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen said in an email sent to employees. Warnock co-founded Adobe in 1982 with Charles Geschke.

He retired as CEO of the company in 2000 and was chairman of the board of directors, a position he shared with Geschke, until 2017.

Charles Geschkethe “father” of the PDF format and co-founder of the software company Adobedied in 2021. Geschke worked for Xerox’s research and development division in Silicon Valley, California, in the 1970s, where he developed software to translate words and images into printed documents with John Warnock, who would become his partner in Adobe.

Geschke and Warnock, whose ideas and drive were ignored by Xerox, went on to found Adobe in 1982, which became a software giant.

Warnock’s story

Before founding Adobe, Warnock was a senior scientist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and has held positions at Evans & Sutherland Computer, Computer Sciences Corp., IBM and the University of Utah, according to the company biography.

Warnock had a doctorate in electric engineering, a master’s degree in mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and philosophy, all from the University of Utah.
