The President Javier Milei received this Friday the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, in the midst of negotiations to admit Argentina to the organization. Yesterday he met with Foreign Minister Diana Mondino.

In the afternoon, the Foreign Ministry and the international organization issued a joint statement where The Government announced that “by the end of the year it will be in a position to present the initial memorandum to the OECD” for entry.
Along these lines, Cormann talked about the benefits that the country could obtain if the entry were to take place. “We believe that the process of joining the OECD can support Argentina’s efforts to create a more stable and prosperous economy in the medium and long term, and promote a better income situation for the Argentine population,” he explained.

Yesterday he met with Mondino and later both participated in the Seminar “Argentina in the OECD: challenges and opportunities of the accession process”.
The seminar was organized by the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI) along with its president, Francisco de Santibañes and the Secretary of Finance, Pablo Quirnoto “describe to civil society” the theme of the accession process from the country to the international cooperation agency.
In addition to Corman and Mondino, there were also present Chief of Staff Guillermo Francos; and the Ministers of Deregulation and State Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger; of Defense, Luis Petri; of Health, Mario Russo; of Security, Patricia Bullrich; and of Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona.
The Foreign Ministry’s statement
Through a statement, they detailed the visit of the head of the OECD, where they announced that “ideas were exchanged and Argentina’s commitment to politically promote the necessary actions and thus carry out the work required in the accession process.”
In these first stages that Argentina is going through on the path to its entry into the organization, they explained that “it is currently preparing the ‘Initial Memorandum’in which a self-assessment will be carried out specifying the degree of alignment of its legislation, policies and practices with each of the substantive legal instruments of the OECD.”
Furthermore, in order to carry out this task, Milei created the “Inter-ministerial Coordination Commission” for accession to the OECD – through the Decree 591/2024– composed of the Chief of Staff and the Ministers of Economy, Justice, Human Capital, Health and Deregulation and State Transformation, as well as the Legal and Technical Secretariat.
