This Friday, the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil ordered the suspension of social network X in its national territory, following a legal battle that it disputed with the company whose owner is Elon Musk.
Musk, who also owns Tesla and SpaceX, criticized the judge Alexandre de Moraes of “pseudo-judge” for having ordered the suspension of the social network: “Freedom of expression is the basis of democracy and An unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political reasons“, wrote.
Alexandre de Moraes He was in charge of signing the ruling, after the deadline expired that the Supreme Court gave to X to establish a new legal representative of the company in the country.
It is decreed “immediate, complete and comprehensive suspension of the operation of ‘X Brasil Internet LTDA’ in national territory,” details the judge’s opinion.
Why Brazilian justice suspended social network X
The suspension is in response to an ultimatum issued by Moraes against X on Wednesday, demanding that the platform inform its legal representative or face being blocked.
The deadline expired on Thursday night, after which the former Twitter user said in a statement that it expected to be blocked “shortly” for its refusal to comply with Moraes’ “illegal orders” to “censor his political opponents.”
The social media post was published amid strong messages from Musk against Moraes, whom he called an “evil dictator” and accused of restricting freedom of expression.
The suspension will be in effect until the platform complies with court orders, pays the fines imposed and appoints a representative in Brazil, according to the ruling.
In April, Moraes launched an investigation into Musk, accusing him of reactivating accounts whose suspensions had been ordered by local courts. X admitted that some of those users managed to circumvent the restrictions.
In recent years, in the name of fighting disinformation, Moraes has ordered the blocking of accounts of figures from Brazil’s ultraconservative movements.
This has been the case since the attempts by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, an admirer of Musk, to discredit the electronic voting system during the presidential elections won by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
