Mass mobilization in Israel demanding negotiations for Hamas hostages

People took to the streets earlier this week following the killing of six hostages in a Gaza tunnel, amid insistence from the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel would remain on the border between Gaza and Egypt under any agreement, something that so far remains nothing more than a negotiation.

He Forum for Hostages and Missing Familiesannounced that Saturday night’s demonstration would not be held in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square, but on Tel Aviv’s Begin Street, at the entrance to the Israel Defense Forces headquarters. The change of location meant that the protest would be combined with the weekly event held by the hostages’ families, who are more openly critical of the government.

Saturday’s protest, 11 months after the devastating October 7 attack, was held under the slogan “Stop the world!”

Speakers at Saturday night’s rally in Tel Aviv included: Andrey Kozlova former hostage rescued from Gaza in an IDF operation; the former hostage Danielle Aloniwho was released along with her young daughter Emilia during the November ceasefire; Shay Dickmanncousin of Carmel Gatwhose killing was announced by the IDF earlier this week along with five other hostages.

There were marches all over Israel

Demonstrations also took place on Saturday night in dozens of towns and cities throughout Israel, as well as on bridges and intersections. Since the hostage killing, protests have become more intense, leading to clashes with police and attempts to block roads.

Crowd calls for hostage negotiations with Netanyahu

Protesters accuse Netanyahu of frustrate a truce and hostage agreement with their demand -absent from Israel’s May 27 proposal that forms the basis for negotiations- that Israel retain control of the Philadelphia Corridor separating Gaza from Egypt.

He Philadelphia Corridor It is a narrow strip of land about 14 kilometers long and 100 meters wide in places, which runs along the Gaza side of the border with Egypt, including the Rafah crossing, the only exit point from Gaza to the outside world that was not controlled by Israel until the army captured the corridor last May.

According to sources, the prime minister told the cabinet last week that prioritizes Philadelphia over hostages. In two press conferences on Sunday and Wednesday, he said Israel would stay on the border. This was despite the insistence of most defense chiefs that Israel can retake Philadelphia at another time if necessary, and that rescuing the hostages who are still alive should be Israel’s top priority.
