The trailer, in addition to providing a free service to the community, will function as a learning space for students from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, who will be able to observe castrations and other minor surgeries. Over the course of a week, the animals will undergo a pre-surgical evaluation, the intervention and, finally, a post-operative follow-up to ensure that their recovery is successful. The mobile operating room will travel to different neighborhoods in the City of Buenos Aires within the framework of the UBA en Acción community assistance program.

The opening ceremony, held in Plaza Houssay, was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Emiliano Yacobitti; the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Alejo Pérez Carrera; the Secretary of University Extension, Jorge Pasart; deans of different faculties and other authorities of the UBA.
In this regard, Yacobitti said: “It is a source of pride to have this mobile operating room, which will travel around the city’s neighborhoods providing a very important service. Those who live with pets will now be able to access quality veterinary care, which is often expensive and even inaccessible to people with fewer resources.”
The dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Alejo Pérez Carrera, added: “Within the framework of responsible ownership, with this mobile we will provide a surgical space adapted to be transferred to different points of the City, where there are few spaces to perform castrations. This effort demonstrates, once again, that the pillars and strength of the University of Buenos Aires are intact.”
Jorge Pasart said: “This allows us to advance in social educational practices. It is a different way of learning and teaching, where students and teachers from different faculties put their knowledge at the service of the population to solve their problems.”
