First, the impact of a diet rich in cocoa on the brain was analyzed, in order to understand how its flavanols could stimulate neurogenesis in the hippocampus, a region of the brain associated with memory. The result was that the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, an important protein for neuronal plasticity, was benefited.
This was reflected in a better memory in those mice that consumed cocoa. This could impact humans significantly, since could prevent neurodegenerative diseases, and even strengthen memory.
