A town with fewer than a thousand inhabitants is one of eight Argentine towns recognized for its potential for rural tourism.
As part of the initiative that the UN Tourismthe community of Caviahue-Copahuelocated in the province of Neuquenobtained the certification that accredits it as a finalist in the Best Tourism Villages competition, which highlights towns for their natural landscapes and cultural heritage, in addition to the connection that their inhabitants have with sustainable tourism activities.

This week, and through a ceremony led by Mayor Oscar Mansegosa and provincial and national officials of Tourism, the town received the certification. At the event, a proposal to expand the town’s tourism possibilities was highlighted: the development of the geopark “Route of the Volcanoes of Northern Neuquén”in the Andes Mountains.


Caviahue-Copahue is one of the Eight towns nominated this year by Argentina to participate in the global call for Best Tourism VillagesThe others are Villa Tulumba (Cordoba), Saldungaray (Buenos Aires), Barrancas (Jujuy), Los Chacayes (Mendoza), Gaiman (Chubut), Urdinarrain (Entre Rios) and Campo Ramon (Misiones). The community of Trevelin (Chubut) could be added to this list based on international recognition.
What to do in Caviahue-Copahue
According to the 2010 population census, Caviahue-Copahue (two settlements 16 kilometers apart) has 608 inhabitantsIt is located in the northwest of the province of Neuquén, on the Andes mountain range and 52 kilometers from Loncopué, the capital of the department. It is located at 1,600 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Copahue volcano and on the shores of the lake of the same name. Access is via Provincial Route No. 26.
Its history dates back to 1870 and is related to one of its main attractions: the Copahue Hot SpringsOnce its medical properties were known, Dr. Pedro Ortíz Vélez – an Argentine doctor living in Chile – obtained the support of local indigenous communities so that his patients could be treated in the hot springs, which are still accessible.

The town also has the High Performance Altitude and Thermal Rehabilitation Center (CEARART), a complex for high-performance athletes dedicated to research, evaluation and training of athletes in thermal waters. In addition, it is possible to visit the ski center and the forests of araucaria and pehuenes where adventure tourism activities take place.
Another of the main attractions is the protected natural area “Copahue Provincial Park”, surrounded by rural areas where indigenous communities live and an active volcano that can be climbed. The town also has the Agrio jumpwhose name is explained by the fact that it contains acidic waters and ancient araucaria forests.
Finally, the population also stands out for its gastronomy, since its characteristic dishes are made with regional products such as the pine nut, the fruit of the pehuén or the trout. SThe preparation ofthe ñacowhich has been considered the first food nationwide to have acquired the seal of Denomination of Origin, ensuring that it is directly associated with the location.
