The European Union is the main foreign investor in Uruguay

According to the report, in 2023 exports of goods to this destination reached 1,930 million dollars, just 56 million dollars less than the record registered in 2022, which consolidated it as the third most important destination with 17%, just behind of China and Brazil.

Among the main destinations is Italy with 31%, Netherlands with 28% and Spain with 19%. Regarding the products, the cellulose It occupies first place with 48% of the total exported to that country last year, just ahead of beef and its byproducts, which represents 17% of total Uruguayan exports.

The main investor in Uruguay

According to the latest report from September, which focused on the strategic commercial relationship between this bloc and Uruguay, the EU is the main foreign investor in the country.

In that sense, the European Union represents 42% of the FDI stock in Uruguay, with 18,000 million dollars, becoming the first investing region in the Uruguay, just ahead of South America.

The first place is occupied by Spanish companies with 18% of the total invested in the country. “Within the industry, energy generation projects stood out, mainly wind, which are large in size. At the service level, there are investments linked to financial services, fintech and business services. However, Spanish investments were also recorded in other sectors such as the food industry, tourism, agro-industrial production and commerce,” the report states.

On the other hand, there is Finland in second place with 13% of the total invested, which is mainly due to investments in manufacturing plants. cellulose, which are projects of very important dimensions. “If you analyze the foreign companies installed in Uruguay, It is observed that they are in line with the data of the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU). The European Union is a highly relevant investor, with Spain as the country with the most installed companies,” adds the report.

In this sense, it establishes that 30% of the foreign companies in the Uruguay XXI base originate from a member country of the European Union, reaching a total of 416 companies.
