General election day began with shared breakfasts under a pleasant sun —Andres Ojeda shared oatmeal pancakes with reporters, while Alvaro Delgado did his thing with scones that even the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF) herself personally claimed, Azucena Arbeleche, when he went to visit him before voting—and then they began to prepare the lunches that are almost cabala: Yamandu Orsi with the Frente Amplista leader Marcos Carámbula; Delgado with the traditional Sunday pasta which, like the internal one, was a lasagna; and the grilled lamb that the president Luis Lacalle Pou shared with the García family for more than 20 years.

Families, certainly, are the protagonists of election day: children crowded to greet Ojeda at the door of the Delgado school on the outskirts of the Republic Bank Club where the white candidate voted—after an hour and a half of waiting—generated friendly smiles; although three women with flags of the National Party, “three generations of white women” who waited to see the former secretary of the Presidency. Delgado’s own daughter, Pilar, had her moment of prominence when casting the mandatory vote for the first time, having the honor of, nothing more and nothing less, covering the ballot with her father’s face.
