October 23rd marks one year since the sanction of the Olympia Lawa law that has the objective of raise awareness about digital violence as one more modality that can collect the gender violence.

The law is named after Olimpia Coral Meloa Mexican activist who promoted this regulation in her country after having been victim of digital harassment. From Grow-genre and work We consider that it is a problem that is increasingly relevantso it is essential to start giving some answers.

The particularities of digital violence

Digital violence is that which occurs through ICTs. And like any form of violence, it has its particularities: digital violence It is characterized by its immediacy, expansibility, and permanence. With a single click the act can be carried out, which can reach massiveness in a matter of minutes, and once carried out, whoever has published the content loses control of it, since it can be disseminated to other people, downloaded and saved.

The ways in which violence can occur through digital media is very broad. Although some of them can be mentioned, they are not exhaustive, since the violence that are presented on the analog plane They can be transferred to the digital plane.

il Professional

On the one hand, Threats and/or sextortion may occur. The first refers to any intimidation that a person can suffer through ICTs (for example: “If you count x thing you will be left without a salary increase”); and the second has to do with the threat of the dissemination of intimate material. Also, the dissemination of photos or videos may occur non-consensual intimate contacts, or sending content to people without their consent to receive it. On the other hand, we can find Doxing, which involves the non-consensual dissemination of personal data through digital platforms. Additionally, it can generate a virtual outing: expose a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity without their consent.

Another form is harassment through digital media, called cyberbullyingand implies repeatedly commit behavior by ICTs with the aim of harass, intimidate, controletc. Some examples are: repetitive discriminatory, sexist and/or abusive comments; constant request submissions, obsessive post monitoring, threatening messages, constant monitoring, etc.

What can be done

Although they may seem like private matters, employing organizations have a responsibility to address them. In this sense, in 2021 Argentina ratified ILO Convention 190, which includes, as an area where workplace violence can be exercised, communications related to work, inside or outside of working hours.

From Grow-género y Trabajo we accompany organizations so that they can intervene in this type of violence. We carry out awareness workshops, We advise on the design of protocols, and assist in specific situations.

From our point of view, Violence is learned in socialization processes, in which gender and the inequalities that arise from these relationships, are a central factor. But at the same time, if learning is cultural, we believe that we can reflect on these facts, review them, and propose relationships based on equality and respect.
