It will be a year where consumers will resort to all kinds of strategies to get savings and discounts on the products in the Christmas basket.

For a few weeks now, the typical products of the year-end holiday season have invaded the shelves of supermarkets and shops. From packaged industrial sweet bread to artisanal bread, the increase is palpable and the proof of this is the great jump in prices, which can range from 3,400 to 40,000 pesosdepending on the quantity and variety of ingredients.

According to Gastón Mora, a representative of the Chamber of Bakers, The sweet bread is expected to reach a cost of between 15,000 and 20,000 pesos, a significant increase compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the president of the Industrial Bakery Federation of the province of Buenos Aires Raul Santoandre pointed out this Sunday in dialogue with Radio Rivadavia that “a kilo of sweet bread in the confectionery costs $25,000” and that given the low demand “sweet bread is sold sliced”.

“Many of the raw materials used, since there are no sales, are going down and today a fresh artisanal sweet bread is available between 20,000 to 25,000 pesos per kilo,” Santoandre explained. In that sense, he clarified that “the price is greatly influenced by the amount of fruit and the variety in the preparation.”

Sweet bread: price increase and the option of installments

The cost of sweet bread is not only a matter of supply and demand, but also a reflection of the country’s economic context. According to data from several consumer consultancies, this year there was a year-on-year increase of between 160% and 170% in prices.

The president of the Argentine Supermarket Confederation, Víctor Palpacelli, warned of an estimated monthly difference of 2.3% compared to October.

Given these increases, supermarket chains announced that they implemented payment methods that allow customers purchase your sweet bread in interest-free installments. According to them, the measure seeks to facilitate access to this traditional Christmas product.
