Germany has already started making a list of shelters and bunkers with the aim of providing a safe and emergency space for civilians, as a result of the growing tensions and conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, according to the Home Office this Monday.

Within the assembly plansa ministry spokesperson indicated that there are underground subway stations, state buildings, parking lots and private properties. Additionally, they will search encourage the population to create your own shelters in houses, in spaces such as basements and garages.

He list will also be found in digital format so that people can quickly find shelter, through an application installed and available on cell phones.

Although still there are no estimated dates and a defined agenda with the calendar, the spokesperson assured that it was a “great project“and what will it take”some time“, while stating that the Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance and other authorities will also participate in the plan.

What shelters does Germany have?

The European country of 83 million inhabitants still contains 579 bunkers that can provide shelter to some 480,000 people and which were built, for the most part, during the Second World War and the Cold war.

Previously, Germany already had about 2,000 shelters and according to the spokesperson, the key points of the plan were agreed at a meeting of senior officials held in June and that it is only now being investigated by a special group.

The fears that drove the project

One of the biggest fears, which has been escalating over time and with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is that Moscow one day attack a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an alliance of which Germany has been a part since 1955.

Between threats and tensions, the German intelligence chiefs warned in October that Russia will likely be able to launch a stroke against NATO in the 2030. Vladimir Putinthe Russian president, warned last week that the conflict with Ukraine had characteristics of a war “global“and that it does not rule out its plans to attack other western powers.
