Artificial Intelligence: am I out of a job or are new possibilities opening up?

Artificial Intelligence: am I out of a job or are new possibilities opening up?

Fear, uncertainty, new challenges are some of the sensations that are experienced today in the labor market regarding the future. As technology advances, new opportunities appear that today are seen as threats.

Until the early 90s it was normal to enter an office and hear the constant, rhythmic tick-tock sound of typewriters. Until the car reached the end and a bell alerted the person that they had to return to the beginning of the paper to continue with the next line. On every, or almost every, desk there was a typewriter. This was the case until the desktop computer became widespread, the sound was turned off and the light from the monitors revealed the eyes of the workers who were now no longer using those devices and went straight to a warehouse.

This is the debate that is present today, Artificial Intelligence is coming to destroy jobs. One may think that since there were no typewriters and the times in which a document was produced were accelerated, all those people did not find employment again. On the contrary, the PC generated a series of positions that were previously unimaginable. Help desk, systems management, infrastructure, telephony and connection, emerged to satisfy the need for the new form that the daily development of tasks took.

This is why I prefer to think about the emergence of new technologies as the challenge we have to learn new skills and be prepared to know how to get the most out of their use. Of course, we are in the middle of the revolution and we still cannot magnify to what extent we are going to be affected by the changes. But, again, in the 90s it didn’t even occur to us that we would be able to have a Smartphone in our pocket that has much more processing speed, connectivity and functionality than those. PC that we used with Windows 95which by the way was quite a revolution at the time.

If the outlook is bleak, we have an advantage when comparing ourselves to past times. Artificial Intelligence was already used in many processes. Even companies like Meta (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) or Google already ran processes based on AI. The difference is that the user did not intervene, today AI is at the forefront and people use it transparently.

For example, the social networks They showed us the need to have a specialist who can decode and translate the brands, preferences, tastes of users and convert them into data for decision making. Thus, today Big Data specialists take center stage and add value to companies. This is a profile that will increasingly be required by companies given that it not only helps the effectiveness of a campaign and decision making, but also collaborates in intelligent distribution and use of the budget.

But there is also everything a debate around the ethical use of AI, something very relevant in sectors such as medicine. This does not exist today, but clearly in the future there will be a need not only for a lawyer, but also for multidisciplinary teams that have knowledge of the legislative corpus and the use of algorithms.

Another example is the AI instructor. Yes, she needs to be educated too. This arises from machine learning processes, which as the words indicate is for a machine to “learn”. But these processes can be autonomous or well supervised. Clearly we do not take the first steps alone, well the Artificial intelligence She doesn’t do it either, which is why she needs that protective intelligence that shows her new paths, teaches her new words and accompanies her in her development, almost like a father or mother.

Changes are also on the horizon in current positions. Today we talk about computer security, user experience, among others. Well, also for the future scenario, profiles will be necessary that can understand these topics, but crossed by Artificial Intelligence.

This is why the debate should not be about whether AI represents a threat or an opportunity, but rather the focus should be on how we prepare to add value and continue to develop in an environment that will be challenging and will come loaded with new challenges. Which, by the way, do not have an end date, but rather are the prelude to others that will be to come.
