The Catholic church, through Caritas Argentina, sent a warning message due to the increase in poverty in Argentina. “The situation is dramatically delicate”they expressed in a statement.
The text called “Christmas renews our hope” bears the signature of the monsignors Gustavo Carrara, Roberto Alvarez and Enrique Martínez Ossola, current bishops of the National Commission of the solidarity organization of the Church.
“The Christmas Eve It is the only night of the year that has its own name and receives this name because of the joy of Birth of Jesus. What is the context of the first Christmas Eve in history? A census of the emperor Augustus. The signing of a decree that changes everyone’s lifewhich seeks to show power and authority. Many times this story repeats itself: force is exercised with the fragile and weak,” they began.
Then, they remembered the journey of the virgin mary and of José for the birth of Jesus. “Joseph and Mary, with an advanced pregnancy, set out for Bethlehem. And without finding a worthy place to be born, the Son of God is born in a manger.”they expressed and added: “On that first Christmas, God chooses to be born in the place of the last, of those who do not count, so that no one, because they are poor or broken in life, is ashamed to approach Him.”
The Church criticized the economic and social situation of Argentina
Cáritas Argentina highlighted the need for “The tenderness of the Child transforms us and repairs our strength. The Light that has come down from heaven contrasts with the dark night of sin, of social injustice, of every man for himself, which ends in all against all.”
Along these lines, they referred to the economic situation and social of the country. “In 2024, the poverty and destitution of children and adolescents, in terms of food insecurity, is dramatically delicate. This is just one face of poverty, of the socio-environmental crisis“, they indicated.
“At the time of Christmas, with the aid of God and ours can become a face of hope, because we continue to ask ourselves what more we can do,” they highlighted in the Christmas message. “We believe, as Cardinal Eduardo Pironio always reminded us, that hope is lived precisely in difficult times, it is born from the cross and grows through faith in the Lord of history”they added.
“Faced with the reality of sin, looking at the Child Jesus we confess that, ‘The sin of the world is immense, but it is not infinite. On the other hand, the merciful love of the Redeemer, this is infinite.’ In the face of social injustice, we remember that Bethlehem means “House of bread” and we are committed to sharing bread with those who do not have it. And before every man for himself, we choose the path of brotherhood and social friendship, the parable of the Good Samaritan, preached by Jesus in the years of his mission as an adult.they added.
“Christmas renews our hope, an active hope that does not give up in the face of adversity”they closed.
