The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboasigned a decree this Tuesday where He cedes power for three days to the vice president appointed by him, Cynthia Gellibert, and not to the vice president elected at the polls, Verónica Abadwith whom he has had a confrontation for a long time.

By constitutional mandate, Noboa must request a license to carry out a proselytizing campaign ahead of the presidential elections next February. Abad was suspended by the Ecuadorian government alleging abandonment of duties and Cynthia Gellibert was appointed in her place.

In the decree Noboa He clarifies that he took three days of leave so that “the periods in which he exercises government “and the moments in which he is temporarily absent from office to carry out proselytizing activities are separated and differentiated.”

Abad had stated on Saturday that on January 5 he would take over power, ignoring Noboa’s decision. “On January 5, 2025, I will assume the constitutional presidency of the Republic of Ecuador by express mandate of the law” while Noboa “participates as a presidential candidate in the electoral campaign,” he announced on his X account.

Due to the conflict with Noboa, Abad asked for support to assume the presidency, but he did not achieve his goal. «In a recorded message he had requested “the support and commitment of each and every one of the functions of the State, Armed Forces, media and mainly of our constituents, the Ecuadorian people, deserving of a respectful, serious, sovereign and clear in the objectives that we must meet,” said Abad.

On January 2, the president Daniel Noboa had temporarily appointed Sariha Moya as acting vice president. The argument: the current vice president Abad never assumed the position of temporary counselor with economic functions at the Embassy of Ecuador in Ankara, capital of Türkiye.

This is a serious fact that affects the institutionality of the Executive function. and it also represents a disregard for an executive decree, but above all it leaves a void in the vice presidency that must be filled,” the Government Minister said then, José de la Gasca.
