The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, leader of a left-wing political party that supports Denmark’s future independence, arrived in Copenhagen late on Tuesday as part of a scheduled trip.
Egede had announced before his departure that a meeting with King Frederik of Denmark, scheduled for Wednesday, had been postponed without explanation. Howeverthe Danish royal court confirmed that the meeting would take place, without providing further details.
Greenland, with a population of 57,000, has been part of Denmark for 600 years and now controls most of its internal affairs as a semi-sovereign territory under the Danish kingdom. Its relations with Denmark have been strained recently due to allegations of historical mistreatment of Greenlanders during the colonial period.

Still, Trump’s stated ambition to expand U.S. territorial control has rattled allies less than two weeks before he takes office.

Greenlandic leader Egede has stated that the island is not for sale. In his New Year’s speech, he reinforced his intention to achieve independence from Denmark. Denmark also maintains that the territory is not for sale and that its fate can only be decided by Greenlanders.
In 2019, Trump canceled a planned visit to Denmark after Prime Minister Frederiksen rejected his idea of the United States purchasing Greenland.
