Catamarca textile company rode the wave of layoffs

Mom Sports arrived in Catamarca in September 2024 with promises of growth. Settling in the facilities of the former Textilcom, the company assumed the commitment to reactivate production and generate local employment.l, driven by provincial government subsidies and high expectations.

However, This week, 23 employees were fired upon returning from their vacation, according to what they reported, without prior notice and in the midst of salary debts accumulated since November, including the bonus. The news generated outrage among workers and the SOIVA union, who also pointed out the lack of clear responses from management.

What aggravates the situation is that, just a few days before the layoffs, the provincial government had granted Mom Sports a “non-refundable contribution” of $132.5 million intended to increase its productive capacity through the acquisition of machinery and strengthening its human resources plant. This subsidy is part of the Productive Strengthening and Support Program, with the aim of promoting economic activity in the region.

Given this situation, The Ministry of Labor of Catamarca carried out a labor inspection and convened a hearing among the representatives of the company, the SOIVA union and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment. The hearing took place this Tuesday at the Provincial Directorate of Labor Inspection. But the truth is that, after the meeting, the continuity of the layoffs was confirmed.

The employees of the textile firm have been complaining for months about non-payment of their salaries and delays in settlements. In this framework, The owner of Mom Sports, Gabriel Corigliano, had declared in December 2024 that the company’s situation was “super” and that they were “happy with the Government”minimizing labor disputes and ensuring that salaries were paid weekly.

Meanwhile, The company alleges that those dismissed had completed the trial period established by law and that the dismissal of the workers was framed within the parameters of the employment contract.. For its part, since The union denies these claims.

The reality is that The continuity of layoffs and reports of salary breaches cast doubt on Corigliano’s statements and generate uncertainty about the future of the plant in Catamarca. Meanwhile, workers and the union are seeking for the provincial government to take a more active role in the conflict, taking into account that it recently granted a million-dollar subsidy to the company.

For now, A new hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22. in which the union, workers, provincial authorities and company representatives will meet again. The conflict remains open.
