Who is the detainee, accused of planning terrorist actions with the Islamic State

The Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrichannounced this Tuesday the arrest of a 21-year-old man who was allegedly planning terrorist actions in the country, as a member of the Islamic State (IS). What is known so far and what is the evidence against him.

“It is a successful operation that prevented the actions of a terrorist”stated the minister at a press conference. The alleged extremist is called David Nazareno Ávila, He is a native of the city of General Roca, Río Negro, where he was arrested, and worked in a courier service. Before, he had a frustrated stint as a volunteer in the Argentine Army.

Ávila was arrested after nine months of an “exhaustive” investigation within “Operation Life” and one of the forces in the operation was the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PFA). Among the evidence against him are his publications on social networks, where he spread content from the Islamic terrorist organization.

“An exhaustive, permanent investigation by a digital undercover agent who obtained important information for the arrest of the terrorist linked to the Islamic State, Daesh. He represented a concrete threat against the Argentines and national security,” Bullrich said in a conference.

Ávila was investigated in the Federal Court of Campana, led by Adrián González Charvay. He did not recognize himself as a terrorist and assured that he approached these groups out of interest in war issues. It was not in his plans to carry out any attack, “it was a game” for him, according to Infobae.

The investigation, in which information from the National Directorate of Criminal Intelligence was used and collaboration was requested from the US agency, the FBI.determined that Ávila had ties to Islamic extremist groups. At the time of his arrest, he lived with his sisters and a niece in General Roca.

An undercover digital agent intervened in the investigation and even kidnapped his phone. There were chats with people who, according to security forces, were decisive in arresting the suspect.

“In Argentina we have a Zionist government that supports Israel and must pay for its sins. I want to carry out an attack. I want to learn how to make explosives “If you can help me,” he reportedly asked a person named Naza, supposedly linked to a terrorist group.

“Peace be upon you brother. They gave me your contact so you can join me in the group,” Naza wrote. Ávila acknowledged this and other similar conversations, but insisted on denying terrorist intentions. For now he will remain detained.
