“Anora”: the B side of “Pretty Woman”, with strong Oscar chances

Directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, this new version of a modern Cinderella is dynamic, agile, luxurious and provocative. Excessive and unnecessary duration plays against it.

Crazy comedy with a dramatic undertone and sad edges, with an excessive duration, counterproductive, “Anora” was the consecration in Cannes of Sean Bakeran independent director who, honestly, has better films, like “The Florida project”, which here was only seen fleetingly on cable.

Maybe “Anora”, which entered the Oscar race strongly, has more hook, for its fun American comedy style of the ’30s (dynamism, agile and sharp responses, luxuries, nonsense and provocation) and also for its protagonist Mikey (without c) madisonalready well appreciated in the film Quentin Tarantino “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”where she played Susan Atkins, and in other less widespread ones.

madison It can either be a tempting sweetheart or a woman ready to fight, or an excited girl who wakes up, suffers and reacts, and in “Anora” He develops his entire catalog, with high scores in every facet and good charm to put the audience in his pocket, except that in some scenes he does not have any clothes with a pocket within his reach, which contributes to his charm.

The plot is simple: a little woman of the night is cool with a wealthy client, and lives the dream of “Pretty Woman”and even commits a hasty marriage, but suddenly discovers that the other is not exactly Richard Gere but just a spoiled and cowardly layabout, the son of a Russian trafficker who sends three mastiffs to return the sheep to the fold, and the bad girl to the street. of sin where it belongs.

In the process, we discover that the Russian is less terrible than his wife, a true viper, instigator and sometimes executor of all evils, and that at least one of the three mastiffs is a tender one, as far as possible, of course.

As noted, there are several differences with “Pretty Woman”and with the opera “The Traviata”which apparently was the initial model of what we now see. And there are several similarities with previous films of Sean Bakeralways attentive to the daily life of low-life girls, the neon lights when they go out, the tinsel that goes to waste, the American dream always failed or unfinished, and the good that there is even in bad people ( except the Russian one in this story). It is enjoyable, but 30 minutes less would have been much better.

“Anora” (USA, 2024); Dir.: Sean Baker; Stars: Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian.
