This district split the elections and will renew 50% of the legislative positions. Doubts about the presentation of the LLA seal in the May elections.
The burning January in Salta did not stop political activity and although in the camps of the different forces the action is still at half speed, Mauricio Macri’s PRO is already looking at the calendar because March 5 is the deadline to present the alliances that will compete in the provincial legislative elections on Sunday, May 4. While this party negotiates with La Libertad Avanza (LLA) a possible national agreement, in the Salta district it will seek to build a multiparty space to confront the governor’s ruling party. Gustavo Saenz.

A movement that could determine the nature of a major opposition agreement will depend on what the LLA does in the elections, after the relevant presentation of that force in December, with the presence of the general secretary of the Presidency, Karina Mileiand the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Martin Menemto make the party official and seal an agreement with the former national deputy and powerful soy farmer, Alfredo Olmedo. Due to inquiries from Ámbito, LLA has not yet defined whether it will run in the provincial elections. “A tough defeat would not be good news for the aspirations of contesting the governorship in 2027,” explained a yellow leader about the doubts. What is also not ruled out is that Olmedo’s Ahora Patria party does appear in the elections to have representatives in the chambers of Deputies and in the local Senate.

Ámbito interviewed the provincial deputy Joseph Gauffinone of the main references of the Salteño PRO, about what that space will do for the local elections. “We are all talking to everyone but we do not forget that the deadline to present the fronts expires on March 5. We intend to be one of the pillars of one that is capable of being a true opposition,” he said. “We act with caution because Sáenz’s ruling party, as it always did, will also seek to get involved in these dialogues but with the aim of neutralizing the construction of opposition agreements,” he warned.
Asked about which forces they would be willing to share a ballot with, he indicated that, in principle, they would aim to reunite those who faced Sáenz in the last provincial elections. That is, agree with the Ahora Patria, from Olmedo; the Plural Front, of Matias Posadasand sectors of the Radical Civic Union, with whom Together for Change was formed in 2023. “From LLA they believe they have a winning seal but in Salta that is not certain, but I understand that Olmedo’s party will be presented in May and we will to dialogue with them. We will do the same with the rest, we have an agreement vocation,” he defined. And he recalled that with JxC six councilors entered the Deliberative Council of the capital of Salta who, despite everything, remain in a single block and with the same name. The only escape to LLA was that of the councilor Pablo Lopez but coordinates similar positions. “This shows that when there is will and dialogue, it is possible,” reflected Gauffin.
When asked if he would be a candidate in May, he acknowledged that there is a group of members who proposed that he run for the provincial Senate for the capital. “I am analyzing it and it will also be a debate within our space, because the essential thing is to put together a great front,” he remarked.
The elections
In Salta, despite the decision of the National Congress to have approved the Single Paper Ballot system, electronic voting will be maintained in this district and there will be no Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primaries (PASO). The people of Salta will go to the polls to elect representatives to the Legislative Chambers, deliberative councils and the mayor of the municipality of Aguas Blancas, in the Orán department, which is intervened.
In May, 50% of the Legislative Branch, which has two chambers, will be renewed in this district. Deputies have 60 members, while the Senate is made up of 23. Another fact to consider is that as a result of the reform of the 2021 Provincial Constitution, out of the 60 municipalities, only 25 will have councilors elected because districts with five or less Councilors will not hold elections until 2027.
“It does not represent us”
In the last few hours, in Salta, the statements of the head of the state-majority public limited company SERVICIOS Energético y Mineros de Salta SA (REMSA) were surprising. Alberto Castilloa PRO man who was summoned by the provincial president when he built his diverse and extensive Gustavo Governor Alliance. “If Macri does not reach an agreement with LLA, he will seek to meet with Sáenz,” he shot on a television program and ignited a mill of rumors. “Castillo does not represent us, nor does he represent the PRO, although no one can deny that he was once in the party. It is not understood why he made those statements, he will have his reasons, but he is wrong,” said Gauffin, dismissing the assertions.
