Henkelthe company of German origin leader in adhesive technologies, capillary care and detergents, He has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of the environment, through an ambitious agenda to achieve carbon neutrality worldwide.
“The main challenge we face is to continue reducing emissions in our production and also support our suppliers in doing the same. Neutrality is such an ambitious goal, as a collective: we all have to put our grain of sand to achieve it, ”he said Jorge Strapasson, president of Henkel Argentina.
In that sense, to improve the evaluation of its CO2 emissions in the supply chain, Henkel has launched the Global Climate Connect program, which involves its suppliers in decarbonization throughout its value chain. Its objective is to collect data on emissions, define joint actions for reduction and improve the capacities of suppliers in the climate field.
Henkel also works to increase the proportion of low environmental impact ingredients in their products, based on renewable or recycled raw materials, in order to continue promoting their sustainable packaging strategy. An example of this is the new concept of packaging for adhesive cartridges, which significantly reduces the use of virgin material, using up to 95% recycled plastic from post -consumption recycling (PCR). This initiative is being implemented throughout Europe.
In line with the above, in Argentina, the company launched Igora Zero AMM, a range of products of the Consumer Brands Professional business, which has an aluminum container and plastic cover of 100% recycled material, as well as the paper of the box It is 92% recycled.
To achieve the goal of zero net emissions, the company has set the following objectives, according to the latest data obtained during 2021:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 and 2 in 42% for 2030.
- Reduce Scope 3 in 30% for 2030.
- Reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 in 90% for 2045.
The new objectives of zero net emissions of Scope 1 and 2 They cover all Henkel operations, including offices, warehouses, research and development centers, laboratories and academies, as well as the vehicle fleet. As for the Scope 3which includes indirect emissions, the objectives focus on the value chain and the previous stages, such as the production of raw materials and containers. In addition, key aspects such as emissions derived from logistics and product treatment at the end of their useful life are taken into account.
“It is essential that we all assume our responsibility to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C, as established in the Paris Climate Agreement. We are already too close to that threshold ”, Carsten Knobel declared CEO of Henkel. “Therefore, we have expanded our climate commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, with concrete actions throughout our value chain,” he added.
Concrete actions to reduce emissions
The emission reduction measures in Henkel plants focus mainly on increasing energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy to meet the remaining demand for energy. Currently, 89% of the electricity bought by Henkel worldwide comes from renewable sources.
Recently, Henkel has reached an important milestone by converting all its production processes for its consumer business unit in Europe to neutral energy in carbon. On the other hand, Henkel Argentina contributes in various ways, for example, with 100% LED lighting in its San Isidro offices.
The importance of collective action
Since a large part of the emissions of Scope 3 They come from the phase of use of products, Henkel seeks to promote more responsible behavior among consumers through specific campaigns. Although it cannot directly influence these emissions, and therefore are not included in its objective of zero net emissions, Henkel continues to promote environmental education with initiatives such as “begins with us” of Henkel Consumer Brands. This campaign offers recommendations for the efficient use of resources in everyday life.
