The decision was taken after the meeting of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, with the Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino. In addition, the United States suspended tariffs for a month after reaching an agreement with Mexico and Canada.

In the midst of tensions due to Donald Trump’s threats on the future and the role of the Panama Canal, the Central American country announced that its government will not renew the memorandum of understanding with China on the so -called new silk route. The document between the two countries had been signed in 2017: “We are going to study the possibility of whether you can end before or not. I think the renewal touches it in one or two,” said José Raúl Mulino, a highest Panamanian president.

After making the decision known, the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio – who is touring Central America – celebrated the decision of Panama and described the measure of “great step forward” in the relationship of that country with the United States. For its part, the Chinese ambassador to Panamanian territory demanded Washington to “learn to respect” the decisions of countries to cooperate with China.

Panama yielded to the United States pressure

Rubio had arrived in Panama last Saturday, in what meant his first official trip abroad as a US diplomacy head, with a clear objective: to recover US control over trade in the Panama Canal.

In this sense, from the Trump administration they made public concern about the role that China plays in that channel and affirmed that “If during a conflict the Chinese government tells them to close the Panama Canal, they will have to do so

In this sense, and after the meeting between Rubio and Mulino, Panama finally gave in to the US pressure and the Panamanian president said that his country will not renew the memorandum of understanding about the so -called new silk route.
