USA hardens restrictions on Chinese chips and other products

The United States imposed new restrictions on key products exports to China, revoking licenses and demanding new permits for technological and chemical companies. The measure aims to limit Beijing access to strategic supplies.

The United States ordered a wide range of companies that stop sending products to China without a license and revoked those already granted to certain suppliers, said three people close to the matter.

The two sources indicated that the Commerce Department will examine case by case license applications to make shipments to China, indicating that it is not a total prohibition.

It is not clear if the new restrictions are part of a broader strategy to boost trade negotiations during a pause in the imposition of higher tariffs.

The US strategy: harden its position with China

The Commerce Department said that exports of strategic importance to China is reviewing, while noting that “in some cases” had suspended “existing export licenses or additional license requirements while the review is pending.” The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

The export controls by the United States emerged as a peak in commercial negotiations between Washington and Beijing. Chinese officials affirm that US restrictions, together with efforts to pressure allies so they don’t use the last ascend chip of Huawei Technologies Co., they violated the spirit of recent discussions in Geneva aimed at soothe the widest tensions about tariffs to the second largest economy in the world by President Donald Trump.
