By transferring the Metel-2022 exercises to the combat stage against the backdrop of the gradual return of Russian troops to bases, the Ukrainian authorities are trying to show their own impunity. This is how political scientists interviewed by Izvestia assess the situation.
According to them, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are most active at training grounds in the southern and southeastern parts of the country, as well as on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. At the same time, despite the beginning of the movement of troops, Russia has enough opportunities to protect the DPR and LPR if necessary, military experts say.
The likelihood of a provocation in the Donbass in the coming days will remain at its maximum, former UN Deputy Secretary-General Sergei Ordzhonikidze noted in an interview with Izvestia.
“Our troops were standing there not in order, as they said in the West, to strike at Ukraine, but in order to be able to apply means of defense in the event of aggression against the Donbass. As soon as the withdrawal of troops began, the Ukrainians felt impunity and probably decided that now was the right time to attack the Donbass, ”the source of Izvestia noted.
Moscow is concerned about the fact that the main actions of the Metel-2022 maneuvers unfolded in the south and southeast of Ukraine, Izvestia sources familiar with the situation said.
At the same time, experts note that Russia, in any scenario, will be able to repel the offensive of Ukrainian troops.
“In the event of a Ukrainian offensive, our group is enough to quickly stop it. If the Ukrainian troops go on the offensive, they will be defeated. And the Javelins and Stingers delivered to them will not help them. In any case, we have enough strength to inflict a complete military defeat, ”military expert Vladislav Shurygin told Izvestia.
