Russian pilots launched “Daggers” in Syria

Russian pilots tested the Kinzhal hypersonic missiles for the first time in Syria.

A new separate regiment of MiG-31Ks, equipped with Kinzhal missiles, flew over the Mediterranean for the first time to conduct exercises.

In addition, an Il-38 medium-range anti-submarine aircraft and a cover group of Su-35 and Su-30SM fighters also took to the skies.

A group of aircraft carried out refueling in the air over the sea. The Il-78 tanker released a hose with a cone, and Su fighters flew up to it.

Naval aviation also takes part in the exercises. Its pilots have special skills for flying over the sea.

On February 15, long-range aircraft Tu-22M3 and MiG-31k with the Kinzhal aviation complex arrived at the Russian Khmeimim air base in Syria to participate in a naval exercise of the inter-fleet grouping of the Navy in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The crews of the Russian Aerospace Forces completed the flight from the points of deployment, covering more than 1.5 thousand km.

The main focus of the exercises is to work out the actions of the forces of the Navy and Aerospace Forces to protect Russian national interests in the World Ocean, as well as to counter military threats to the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions.

Air-based Kinzhal missiles are the latest type of strategic weapons. President Vladimir Putin spoke about them in a message to the Federal Assembly in 2018. In particular, the development of the Avangard complexes with hypersonic gliding units, the Sarmat heavy intercontinental missiles, the Burevestnik cruise missiles with a nuclear power plant, and the Peresvet laser complex were announced for the first time.

Missiles “Dagger” can maneuver on the trajectory during the mission and therefore their interception is extremely difficult. According to officials, intercepting a target flying at a speed of Mach 10 and maneuvering along a trajectory is an almost impossible task for today’s air defense and missile defense systems.
