Incorrect use of drugs in self-treatment of cough can lead to serious consequences. This was told on Saturday, February 19, by a general practitioner of the highest category of the Clinical Hospital “RZD-Medicine” in the city of Tver, Alexander Kozhevnikova.
The first most common mistake in self-medication is the wrong choice of antibiotic.
“If we talk about errors in the treatment of cough (with a cold or COVID-19. – Ed.), The very first thing worth mentioning is the unreasonable self-prescription of antibiotics. If you make the wrong choice, the drug will be ineffective and harmful, ”Sputnik radio quoted the doctor as saying.
The expert clarified that antibacterial drugs have their own indications, contraindications, correct doses and terms of treatment.
At the same time, a person who does not have medical knowledge, as a rule, does not pay attention to such instructions for use, but prefers the drug, “which is on everyone’s lips.” In this case, the antibiotic may be either ineffective or even harmful.
The second mistake in the treatment of cough Alexandra Kozhevnikova called the uncontrolled intake of expectorants, since the cough can have both a viral nature and other causes.
“One of the most important points is the thoughtless use of expectorants for coughs in general. The fact is that a cough does not necessarily accompany a respiratory tract infection. It may be a sign of other pathologies. Therefore, expectorant drugs may not work or give side effects, ”the therapist clarified.
She added that it is important to correctly identify the cause before proceeding with its treatment. Only a medical specialist can make a correct diagnosis when coughing, Kozhevnikova concluded.
On February 9, Invitro-Ural pediatrician Alena Mikhailova urged not to self-treat children who showed symptoms of COVID-19.
At the same time, it is possible to reduce body temperature with drugs only after the mark of 38.5 degrees, in some cases – after 38 degrees, the pediatrician specified.
In January, Doctor of Medical Sciences, General Practitioner Tatyana Bandurina told Izvestia about the dangers of self-treatment with antibiotics for asymptomatic or mild coronavirus or SARS. In addition, she said that antibiotics are not needed at all in the treatment of coronavirus infection, since their use does not provide the necessary dynamics of recovery.
