On February 19, the Russian Armed Forces held a planned exercise of strategic deterrence forces, during which ballistic and cruise missiles were launched. The course of the exercise was supervised by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin press service reports.
The exercise was attended by the forces and means of the Aerospace Forces, the Southern Military District, the Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern and Black Sea Fleets.
It is emphasized that the tasks set for the exercise of the strategic deterrence forces have been completed in full. All missiles hit the targets and confirmed the specified characteristics. The reliability of the weapons of strategic nuclear and non-nuclear forces was also checked.
“The exercise of the strategic deterrence forces was planned earlier, during which the readiness of the military command and control bodies, launch combat crews, crews of warships and strategic missile carriers to perform the assigned tasks, as well as the reliability of the weapons of strategic nuclear and non-nuclear forces, was checked,” the message says.
Thus, during the past exercises, ships of the Navy carried out launches of Caliber cruise missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles at sea and ground targets.
In addition, the Aerospace Forces successfully launched Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles.
The Iskander ground-based cruise missile was launched at the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region.
From the Barents Sea, the nuclear submarine Karelia launched the Sineva ballistic missile at the Kura range.
“The Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the position area of the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome at the Kura test site on the Kamchatka Peninsula,” the Kremlin added.
It is also noted that air-launched cruise missiles fired from Tu-95ms long-range strategic missile carriers hit targets at the Pemboi and Kura training grounds.
All missile launches were successful, the press service added.
The course of the exercises, together with the Russian leader, was also observed by his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.
Earlier that day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the exercise of the strategic deterrence forces was planned to test the readiness of military command and control agencies, launch combat crews, crews of warships and strategic missile carriers to carry out assigned tasks, as well as the reliability of weapons of strategic nuclear and non-nuclear forces.
Also on Saturday, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet (BSF), the guards missile cruiser Moskva, performed artillery firing in the Black Sea as part of the exercises of naval forces. According to the Navy, the artillery systems were used to repel an air attack by a mock enemy who was trying to launch a missile attack on the bases of the fleet forces.
On February 12, it was reported that more than 30 ships were taking part in the large-scale exercises of the Russian Black Sea Fleet that had begun. It was noted that the purpose of the exercises is to work out the defense of the sea coast of Crimea, the Black Sea Fleet’s bases, as well as the country’s economic facilities and sea communications from possible military threats of a mock enemy.
