Peskov commented on the incident with Putin’s Labrador who frightened Merkel

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on the incident with Vladimir Putin’s dog, which entered the Russian-German negotiations in 2007.

So, Labrador Koni went into the room where Putin had a conversation with then German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The animal scared the German politician.

The Kremlin spokesman called this situation awkward and stressed that it was “not out of malice.”

“The fact that Merkel has some kind of dislike for dogs, then we simply did not know. And you know that Putin loves Koni and the whole country adored Koni. At all events, she went where she wanted. And it was very organic, it was touching. Therefore, what then happened to Merkel, well, an awkward situation. But not out of malice, as they say, not out of malice, ”Peskov said on the air of the Rossiya 1 TV channel on February 20.

In 2016, in an interview with the German publication Bild, the Russian leader said he was unaware of Merkel’s fear of dogs. He stressed that he apologized to his colleague for the incident.

Labrador Koni was Putin’s favorite and often attended meetings at the president’s country residences. The pet moved freely around the house, and Putin’s guests often treated the dog with treats.

The dog died in 2014 at the age of 15.

On December 9, 2021, Putin thanked Merkel for many years of fruitful cooperation, emphasizing her significant contribution to the development of Russian-German relations. The head of state stressed that Merkel would always be glad to see Russia.

Merkel served as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021.
