The plane with 14 Russian children taken from the camps in Syria and the orphanage in Damascus landed at the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow. This was reported on Thursday, February 24, on the website of the Children’s Ombudsman in the Russian Federation.

It is noted that it was possible to deliver the children to their homeland after a three-day visit to the SAR by employees of the Office of the Commissioner for Children’s Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, as well as a number of other agreements. Returned children from 3 to 15 years old. Five of them were in the shelters of Damascus, nine more were taken out of the refugee camps located in the Trans-Euphrates.

“All the children endured the journey calmly, mostly sleeping. Before departure, they were fed at the Khmeimim air base by our military. They also provided treats and gifts for the children on board. All the way the guys were under the supervision of doctors and psychologists from our delegation,” Elena Novoseltseva, adviser to the children’s ombudsman’s office, commented on the flight.

After arrival, the children were placed in one of the Moscow clinics. Here they will undergo a full medical examination, including for COVID-19, as well as psychological assistance. Then, after the recommendations issued by the doctors, they will be transferred to the custody of their relatives.

Earlier, on December 16, 2021, nine children were brought to Russia from Syria. On November 17, Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova said that in total the Office of the Children’s Ombudsman had prepared documents for the export of 140 Russian children from the Arab Republic.

Work on establishing the whereabouts and repatriation of underage Russian citizens located in Iraq and Syria began in the summer of 2017. In total, more than 300 children have already been returned to Russia from the zones of armed conflicts in the Middle East.
