Universities began to reduce enrollment in a number of popular areas

Russian universities are reducing enrollment in the areas of “Economics” (54 universities abandoned it over the past year), “Management” (47), “Vehicles” (48), “Service Sector” (39), “Construction” (18), follows from the annual monitoring of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, which is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science.

“Construction and Transport directions are very expensive education. There is always a very small competition for “Construction”: there is no extra-budgetary recruitment, budget places are often not filled. For a university, this is a rather unprofitable story. I emphasize that we are now talking about non-core educational institutions, ”said Viktor Bolotov, an academician of the Russian Academy of Education, the former head of Rosobrnadzor, in an interview with Izvestia.

The expert added that it is costly to train transport specialists: a non-core university simply cannot afford to purchase expensive equipment for the sake of a small group of students. The demand of the entrants themselves fell on the “Economics” and “Management”, Viktor Bolotov believes.

However, some universities, on the contrary, introduce all the directions listed above. True, there are fewer of them: “Economics” and “Management” were added to the curriculum for 37 educational institutions, “Vehicles” – nine, “Service Sector” – 16, “Construction” – only eight.

The monitoring notes that Russia has “an exceptionally high rate of renewal of higher education” – on average, it is about 20% per year. In practice, this means that every fifth university adds or cancels subject programs every year.
