Watching war with kids?

PER

media literacy

The war in Ukraine is not only taking place nearby, it is also affecting us. Most of us would like to crawl into a snail shell with the whole family. We would especially like to keep the children away and protect them.

But that is not possible in our media society. It’s better to watch the news together with the girls and boys and take the time to discuss what you’ve seen and heard. To explain what that means for us – and what doesn’t. Who to believe and who not. The teaching of media skills has never had such a bitter aftertaste. Nevertheless, it is necessary even in times like these.

CONS

Without pictures

If children are younger than ten years old, then they should be kept away from war pictures. If the offspring is worried and asks questions, you have to answer honestly, of course; Don’t sugarcoat anything and explain what’s happening in Ukraine in a child-friendly way – without spreading fear and terror. Because after all the uncertainties and changes that the corona pandemic brought with it, the war in Europe is now bringing the next unpredictability into all of our lives – of course, the youngsters are also feeling this. If the children are older or already teenagers, then you should watch the news together, talk about what’s going on together – and deliberately take breaks from the news to calm down.
