Earlier in the day, Carnegie Hall in New York announced the suspension of Russian conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev from performances. In the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Gergiev’s place will be taken by Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Classical music news portal Slipped Disc reported that Carnegie Hall was under pressure to remove artists from performances as a measure of pressure on musicians allegedly close to the Russian leadership. The authors do not know the role of the US government in this situation, they assume that what happened is connected with Russia’s actions in the Donbass.
