The famous Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato will soon start preparing two premieres at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. He confirmed that he would arrive in St. Petersburg on March 15. On Sunday, February 27, the artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater Vladimir Kekhman told Izvestia.
“Nacho Duato, Spanish choreographer and our artistic director of the ballet – I just spoke to him and he confirmed the date – March 15 arrives in St. Petersburg. He is preparing two premieres, both will be released this year. This is the opera “Carmen” – Duato will stage an opera performance for the first time. Set design is being done by Jafar Chalabi, an Iraqi-based architect and artist based in Vienna, who has already collaborated with Duato. The next premiere is the ballet Don Quixote, Duato will release his original version using the classical basis. We will make our “most Spanish” ballet even more Spanish,” said Kekhman.
Nacho Duato directed the National Ballet of Spain for 20 years. In 2011-2014, Duato served as Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s ballet troupe. Over the years, the theater’s repertoire has been replenished with one-act ballets by Nunc Dimittis, In the Forest, Without Words, Duende, Prelude, White Darkness, The Invisible, as well as multi-act performances of The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker. In 2014-2018, Nacho Duato directed the Berlin Ballet company. In 2019, he returned to the leadership of the Mikhailovsky Theatre.
