When a decade ago the Argentine flag was raised again in Malvinas

I remember that when I did a report on him, he answered me. “I had to draw strength from anywhere and win the relay race, I couldn’t see our flag raised again. It didn’t matter that many of the marathoners were ‘pros’, we had to beat them and we did. The Argentine flag is waving again in Malvinas.; Luis Escudero told me at that time.

The feeling won over the journalist who had gone in order to graph the presence of Malvinas war veterans who were visiting the Islands after 30 years of war.

I remember as if it were today when the then Governor of the Islands gave the winners of the marathon the medals, the cup and when the National Pavilion was hoisted in front of the Argentine sea under the Argentine National Anthem.

It was a Sunday afternoon, when the day was beginning to give way to night.

Falkland citizens, English war veterans lined up listened with great respect to the National Anthem. With the same respect, they also observed the Argentine flag flying at the top of the mast.

It is true that a marathon does not heal, much less erase the wounds of a war. But, even if it was not allowed for the Argentine flag to fly again after three decades of being herded.

The marathon had an extension of 30 kilometers. In addition, Argentine and English veteran marathoners from all over the world participated.

Malvinas is a feeling. I must confess that only in 2012, when my profession as a journalist gave me the opportunity to reach the Malvinas Islands, did I feel the emotional value that this piece of land usurped in 1833 has.

Being a journalist gave me the opportunity to conduct interviews and reports in different parts of the world. It even gave me the opportunity to interview Pope Francis, but nothing equals the feeling and emotion that I felt having lived, a decade ago, for a week with a group of war veterans who offered their lives in the attempt to recover those kilometers. of land usurped by the English.

I give thanks to life and to the profession of journalist for having been able to reach the Malvinas Islands and having been able to see the Argentine flag fly from the top of a mast.
