In the early days, the members were from the Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Wagram wine-growing regions, but in recent years there has been an expansion with winegrowers from the Vienna and Carnuntum wine-growing regions. These areas are subject to the national system of origin DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), which essentially means nothing other than controlled origin. The grapes, which are processed in the respective DAC region, must come from the region, the specified location or the precisely defined vineyard, depending on the information. Vienna is an exception, since the Vienna Mixed Set DAC is rightly about the way the wine is produced. The Viennese ÖTW member companies still live the vineyard origin of their wines according to the statutes of the ÖTW.
In addition, the ÖTW members have agreed to evaluate their best locations in a more differentiated way. Each individual location shows its peculiarity in the taste profile in the wine. Uniform standard wines without any connection to their origin are therefore excluded. In order to be able to give wine lovers further orientation regarding the quality of origin, the best locations from the respective region of origin have been divided into 1st ÖTW location (1ÖTW) and listed on the label since the company was founded. The elite of the top locations have now been filtered out of these locations and given the designation Große ÖTW Lage (GÖTW). When buying wine, a glance at the label gives you an idea of the exact origin and quality, especially in terms of price/performance.
To put it in a nutshell: it is mainly thanks to the ÖTW companies that (in addition to the introduction of the DAC) the principle of origin is more and more practiced in our wine-growing country as well, instead of orienting ourselves to the wine quality according to the long-superfluous and outdated sugar pyramid . A milestone for consumers when it comes to purchasing orientation.
The OÖN sommelier team congratulates and dedicates the upcoming wine show to this success story, under the title: 30 years ÖTW with Rieslings from the 1st layers (1ÖTW).
