Should scooters be banned in the city?

hurdles

A quick and flexible alternative to the car in the city – the electric scooters have always proven themselves. But even though we’ve been using them for years, e-scooters continue to wreak havoc on the streets. They are parked carelessly on the left and right, blocking parking spaces or driveways. The companions often lie across the sidewalk – a walk thus becomes a veritable urban hurdle race. And as recent events show: the risk of accidents with e-scooters is greatly underestimated by many. Be it the speed with which some scooter drivers hiss past pedestrians, or the carelessness that spreads when you get on the scooter after one too many glasses of wine and risk a brisk ride.

Technical solution

Manoeuvrable, fast, flexible, relatively cheap – the rental scooters are a wonderful means of transport in the city center (when the weather cooperates). If you want to reduce the number of cars in the city center, they are a good addition to the mobility mix with bicycles, public transport or walking. Of course, the scooters parked in the Wild West style are a problem, but one that can be solved technically (if not with the common sense of the users). For example, because you simply cannot log out if the scooter has not been parked properly and the driver has to continue paying. Or by means of a signal that the scooter sends to the rental company when it is in the wrong position or in the way. In times when everyone is talking about digitization, a (rapid) solution should be found.
