The successful duo is therefore a great advertising medium for the local wine industry. The trade magazine Falstaff has now honored the work of the two with the award “Winemaker of the Year 2022”!
Manfred Ebenauer originally studied marketing, but one day the inner wine gene told him that he shouldn’t be stuck in some advertising agency, but rather implement what he has in mind as a free spirit with and for natural agriculture. The father, who was probably surprised, took over the practical training to become a winemaker. The theoretical background was learned at the Krems School of Viticulture and, as a direct hit, he met his Marion there, who had previously completed a twelve-month internship in Vienna with Fritz Wieninger. After training as a wine graduate, the enterprising Marion ended up in California with Wolfgang Puck, and then later, after successful years at Wein & Co., together with Manfred, took over the Ebenauer winery in Poysdorf, which was renamed Ebner-Ebenauer.
20 hectares of vineyards are cultivated in 38 vineyards around Poysdorf and the majority are mature vines that have been cultivated organically for several years. Hand picking is obligatory, in the cellar, after spontaneous fermentation, the wine is given the time it needs to be complex and optimally balanced when it comes to the market. Well split, almost 70 percent of the annual production is exported to more than 20 countries. The range of white wines includes classic DAC wines, local wines and site wines such as Herrmannschachern, Ried Bürstling and the local top location Ried Maxendorf. Only Veltliner, Riesling and Chardonnay from the Maxendorf site are sold to customers under the Black Edition label. St. Laurent, Pinot Noir and Blauer Zweigelt belong to the red portfolio. And of course a top sparkling wine from the Austrian sparkling wine capital should not be missing: Blanc de Blanc Zero Dosage! As is usual in Champagne, the base wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay, which has an incredible seven years to mature on the yeast. A rarity that is one of the best sparkling wines in the country. Congratulations on the products and on the “Winemaker of the Year 2022” award!
