Pride Month: How to be allies of diversity inside and outside the office?

Build a equitable, inclusive and collaborative workplace, in which each person contributes from their experience, knowledge and way of being is essential. At GE, our hope is that, not just this month, but every day, we are community allies to provide a safe, welcoming, empathetic and respectful environment for all people. But how can you be an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community inside and outside the office?

  • Be willing to listen: Often, we want to speak and bring words of comfort to people. But being really willing to listen, with an open mind and without prejudice, is the wisest thing to do in many cases.
  • Learn about the theme: Empathetically and proactively seek to understand the issues and difficulties facing the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • When observing an aggression, act!: When witnessing a situation of aggression (physical and/or verbal), remove the person from the place. Away from danger, witness and seek help for more severe measures. Remember that homophobia and transphobia are crimes!

tolerance and respect

The tolerance and respect They help us foster an inclusive and diverse culture and, consequently, create a workspace where everyone feels safe and accepted to develop. Employees can give their full potential in an environment where they feel uninhibited and free. In this context, it is important to encourage employees to act and think without prejudice, understanding that we can all contribute a differential value for what we are as people.

Taking action and being an active agent of this change is key, and including labor policies that are in accordance with this perspective, too. For this reason, for several years now, as a company, we have devoted ourselves to the vindication of LGBTIQA+ rights and we are part of Pride Connection in Argentina, Colombia and Peru, a network that seeks to promote inclusive work spaces for sexual diversity and generate ties for the attraction of LGBTI talent.

The diversity of beliefs, opinions and ideas gives rise to new perceptions and points of view, which opens the panorama to questions that are not usually considered or raised. Encouraging this reasoning both within organizations and outside of them is the path we must follow to achieve a fairer society that provides full opportunities and equal conditions for all people.

In this Pride Month, we embrace diversity and all those characteristics that make us unique. We encourage all companies to adopt a diverse and inclusive culture, which allows for a work environment free of prejudice and limitations; and people to get rid of stereotypes and be genuinely free. Under these pillars we can together build a world that works better for everyone.
