The variety of Sauvignon Blanc at the OÖN Wine Show in Paris

If more evidence was needed, it was provided with the past Upper Austria News Wine Show in Paris, on the cruise ship Seine Comtesse. Wein & Co managing director Willi Klinger and OÖN sommelier Hans Stoll selected Sauvignon Blanc “around the world”.

The cradle of the aroma variety is in the upper reaches of the Loire, specifically from the appellations Sancerre and Pouilly Fumè. With the latter, the geological composition of the soil comes into play: flint, which gives the wine a cool, spicy minerality in the taste profile in addition to the typical aroma of gooseberries and citrus. In Bordeaux, on the other hand, it is in the Entre deux Mers region (between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers) that Sauvignon prevailed over Ugni Blanc and shaped the style of white Bordeaux wines. From the cool Chilean Casablanca Valley, these representatives of the variety come to wine lovers with a refreshing, lively acidity structure and dominant, exotic fruit notes. Stellenbosch in South Africa is also a popular origin. Characterized by the freshness of the Atlantic, there is a relatively high temperature difference between hot days and cool nights. So the best conditions for optimal aroma storage. New Zealand without Sauvignon Blanc is actually unthinkable. The origin-typical representatives from the Marlborough area (in the south of the North Island) bring wines with ripe notes of citrus fruits and a breeze of spicy-smoky flint into the glass, garnished with fine, fresh acidity. And we Austrians? In addition to Lower Austria and Burgenland, Styria is at the top of the winner’s ladder! The South Styrian representatives have been world champions several times with their “tasty” Sauvignons. And here too: Warm days/cool nights deliver what you would expect from a crisp Styrian. Elderberry, gooseberry, a pinch of paprika with currant and an optimal balance of body, extract, acidity and alcohol that’s what makes it so special. If the origin profile of the best vineyards comes into play on top of that, the match is over.

With this Sauvignon Blanc origin portfolio, Willi Klinger was able to provide the perfect basis for an extraordinary wine show, which the OÖN sommelier presented to the audience in an exciting way. The result of this extraordinary tasting will be in the upcoming OÖ Nachrichten Saturday edition, on July 25th, 2022.
