Hybrid work as a promoter of mental health

Hybrid work as a promoter of mental health

This topic is analyzed in depth and is evidenced in the research “What workers want: from surviving to thriving at work” carried out by ManpowerGroup with more than 40,000 people in more than 40 countries, in which 54% of men agree that, to succeed at work, they need to have good mental health management, while, in the case of women, 60% say the same. In addition, the survey concludes that people do not want to have to survive, they want to prosper.

The hybrid work model comes to satisfy this demand of the collaborators. The flexibility to choose where to work and how; the reduction of travel time, which allows us to spend time with family, friends, and personal projects; and the restructuring of work dynamics that this model implies, which usually results in a better division of tasks or in making certain processes faster and more effective, produce not only a better balance between work and personal life, but also reduce the consequences that work can generate in our mental health. Thanks to the flexibility and the hybrid work model, the burnout (exhaustion) experienced by the collaborators decreased from 45% (in the middle of the pandemic) to 39%[1].

Now, it is also essential that people have the right spaces to do remote work: a home where we can be overwhelmed by other distractions and obligations, or a coffee where there is a lot of noise, they may not be ideal. In this sense, WeWork spaces are specially designed for this, as centers for collaboration, productivity and inspiration. They have shared and private areas that are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, with amenities to carry out daily work. Thus, each member can organize their schedules in the way that best suits their needs.

I believe that, as leaders, it is essential that we put these issues on the agenda in order to create work spaces that are more pleasant and supportive of people, asking ourselves questions such as what is best for my team? How do we work better? Do collaborators have the spaces to voice their problems? Our focus must be on strengthening our culture and making our teams healthier, happier and more productive. When we trust our employees to freely choose where and when to do their best work, they feel happier and perform at their best.
