Truss plunges the Tories into an existential crisis

If you want to watch them completely screw up the inauguration of a new government, you only have to look to the UK. What happened there around short-term Prime Minister Liz Truss defies description. Just over six weeks ago, the 47-year-old was chosen to succeed the behavioral Prime Minister Boris Johnson – and now she’s gone again.

The beginning of the downward spiral was marked by their unopposed tax cut plans, which immediately triggered a fiasco on the financial markets. The subsequent emergency braking followed by a U-turn turned into a fiasco. The dismissal of Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng did not appease the critics. On the contrary: resentment and resistance to the new boss at 10 Downing Street grew rapidly.

The previous negative peak was on Wednesday evening. First, the interior minister resigned in the dispute over future migration policy. Then a tumultuous scene ensued during a vote in the House of Commons: Some Tory mandaters were literally “forced into the appropriate voting room” just to ensure the government passed its fracking bill. This was unprecedented in London.

Struggling for composure, Conservative MP Charles Walker said: “I’ve never experienced a day like this. It’s inexcusable, a shame, horrible. I’m so angry at how this government is damaging our party, I’ve had enough.” Truss’ resignation on Thursday is therefore only the logical consequence of this tragic development.

After these six weeks of chaos in London, the first thing to realize is that the EU can be very happy that the British are no longer part of the club. And secondly, the conservatives are well advised to quickly make a permanent realignment. Because time is pressing, after all, the conservatives are already faced with the question of their very existence: At the YouGov research institute, Truss, who will remain in office until the successor has been clarified, is the most unpopular head of government since the surveys began. And their Tories are already more than 30 percentage points behind the opposition Labor Party in polls.
